Beard Trimmers

Beard and Nose trimmer reviews

Beard and Nose trimmer reviews

Considering you’re reading Major Beard, I think it’s a fair consideration that you either already have a beard or are considering growing one. And if you’ve got a beard, you need to trim it.

Even if you don’t have a beard right now, there’s so much that a man needs to keep groomed these days, from the hair on your head to errant stragglers that will start arriving in your ears as you age. (Yeah, getting old is so much fun…)

That’s why you need the right tools for the job, and why every man needs a decent hair, beard, and nose trimmer in his bathroom that he can use as part of his grooming ritual.

Things to look for when you’re buying a beard and nose trimmer

So you’ve decided you need a trimmer, but you don’t know where to start. You’ve realized there’s a massive amount of options out there when it comes to choosing a beard and nose trimmer.

Do you go for a dedicated trimmer, or a more generalist grooming kit?

Do you buy something with replaceable heads or snap-on attachments?

Do you need multiple trimming lengths or just one for your particular style?

However, whatever it is you’re looking for in a beard or nose trimmer, there are a few questions you should ask and things that are incredibly important to focus on. Things that, if you get them right, have a disproportionately large effect on the quality and results you’ll get from your trimmer, and will pay dividends when you come to use your new purchase.

What are you going to use it for?

First off, ask yourself what you’re going to use it for. It might be that you need something that functions as a top quality groomer, and you don’t care too much about how it cuts your hair.

Your current electric razor might be getting old and rickety, so if it functions as a decent beard trimmer that’s a bonus. You might have a particular style that you like to keep, so it could be important that the kit comes with a certain attachment just for that style.

Either way, it’s important to know what you need, so that you get exactly what you’re looking for.

How good are the blades?

There’s a lot of variation when it comes to blade quality. Some companies just throw cheap steel on there, and hope it works. Other trimmers come with surgical quality, double plated, self-sharpening blades.

Obviously, this makes a huge difference when it comes to trimming. It also makes a big difference in the comfort of the shave you get. A better quality blade will be better for the skin, so for you guys with sensitive skin, you’ll want to be looking for a higher quality set of blades.

How is it powered?

The battery might be the most important thing you can look for when you’re buying an electric trimmer or groomer. After all, it’s the battery that drives the shaving heads, so you want the best one possible.

You should be looking for two things. What the battery is made from, and its lifespan.

Cheaper batteries are made of nickel-cadmium or nickel hydride. These are good enough, but tend to run out fast, run out if you leave the battery for a long time unused, and over time the lifespan of the battery shortens as it bleeds out.

What you want to be looking for is lithium or lithium ion batteries. Compared to cheaper batteries, lithium ion batteries charge much faster, (up to 10 times faster in some cases,) hold a charge longer, as well as delivering much more power. They’re just better all round.

Regarding lifespan, you’re going to want to be thinking how long it takes you to shave. If you know you can complete a shave in 5 minutes and you shave once a week, then 30 minutes of battery means you’ll probably have to charge your trimmer once a month or so.beard and nose trimmer reviews

What else comes with the kit?

There’s a lot of options with beard trimmers. In just these few reviews alone we’ve got self-contained units all the way to kits with a dozen separate essential pieces.

Once you know what you need, it’s worth checking everything over. Sometimes, you might not get something you think comes with your trimmer, so don’t take it for granted.

So now we know what we’re looking for, lets check out the reviews.

The entry level multigroom trimming kit from industry staples Philips, this trimmer comes with everything a man could want if he’s looking for a starter set. First off, the cut is great, as you’d expect. The blades on this trimmer are self-sharpening chromium steel, and absolutely quality, chopping through thick, difficult hairs with no issues.

It’s got everything you need as part of the kit, too. 5 separate heads with everything from a standard trimmer, a nose and ear trimmer, to a beard trimmer with built in 18 position guide comb. Each head snaps on and off with a simple locking system that keeps everything secure.

It’s got a solid 35 minute battery life, with a full charging time of 10 hours. It’s also fully washable, making cleanup as simple as rinsing it off. Even better, if you somehow don’t like it, there’s a 45 day no questions asked returns policy, as well as a 2 year warranty just in case something breaks.

Overall, this is a solid piece of kit. It performed okay at everything, from trimming my beard to snatching up errant hairs on the edge of my ear. I also really like the included hair trimming comb. I like to shave my head, and having an option that’s as good as a professional quality shaver included like this, almost as an afterthought, was a lovely touch.

Pros

Cons

  • Great cut, consistent and clean
  • Long battery life
  • Great selection of accessories and attachments
  • 100% Washable
  • Doesn’t irritate the skin
  • Minimum cutting length 1mm, which some people might find a bit long
  • Can’t be used whilst corded, charged battery only

The bigger brother to the 3100 series, the Norelco Multigroom 5100 has exactly the same set of blades and motor, so you’d think you’d get the same cut. But you’d be wrong. Powered by a much stronger lithium ion battery, the 5100 is an exceptional little hair trimmer that puts out great performance.

As it’s got a lithium ion battery, power output is much better. 60 minutes of power on a full charge means you’ll go a long time between needing to plug it back in, and if you forget, it’s got a quick charge feature, so you can be up and rolling in as little as 5 minutes.

There’s a good variety in the attachment heads, too. The full size and precision trimmers handle basic jobs, and the detail shaver is specifically designed to clean up unwanted hairs after a shave. There’s a nose trimmer, as well as a hair comb and a stubble comb, both of which can be set to multiple lengths in ranges as small as 1mm, so you can get the exact look you want, every time.

One intuitive feature is the turbo boost. At the touch of a button, the shaver goes into overdrive, buzzing in your hand like something demonic. It’s designed to shift power to the blades to cut through thicker, problem hairs. I have to say, it does this job perfectly.

Pros

Cons

  • Excellent cut
  • Lithium ion battery with quick charging
  • Excellent set of attachment heads
  • 100% washable
  • Turbo boost button
  • Plastic body can feel quite flimsy
  • Length guard on stubble trimmer can move in use

The top of the range Philips Norelco trimming set, the Multigroom Pro 7500 lives up to its name. With the same solid quality chromium steel self-sharpening blades that come with every Multigroom model and a top quality lithium ion battery to drive them, as well as Philips’ proprietary turbo boost technology for a more powerful shave, this trimmer delivers literally everything a man could need.

The design of this trimmer is simple. You charge the base, then attach whichever head you need for the job at hand and get going. It comes with a comprehensive set, with the expected shavers and standard trimmer heads for normal work, up to specifically designed nose and body hair trimmers. The length ranges available too are excellent, with up to 20 settings per guide comb, in 1mm increments.

The power performance is great, as well. 60 minutes total runtime, with an hour to charge it back up and a quick charge option for emergency situations. It’s just a shame that you have to run it off of the battery, and can’t power it with the mains cable at all.

It’s also fully waterproof, so you can use it in the shower, and the blades are designed for wet as well as dry shaving. Whatever you need it to do, this trimmer delivers, time after time.

Pros

Cons

  • Great cut, every time
  • Excellent set of attachments, to do everything you might need
  • Fantastic lithium ion battery, 60 minutes use and quick charge
  • Fully waterproof, so you can use it in the shower
  • Turbo boost
  • Can’t be used off of mains power, has to be charged first
  • Minimum length on the trimming guards is 1mm, which can be too long

A specific nose and detailing trimmer from Philips, the 5100 series precision trimmer does what it does well enough, but I wish it had more options, especially when you can buy a Multigroom trimming set for about the same price.

With the same chromium steel blades and skin guard technology to keep your skin safe and healthy, this little unit certainly performs well at what it’s built for. It’s even suited for eyebrows, which as you might know, can be a really difficult area to cut well.

It comes with the nose trimmer attachment, two eyebrow combs and a beard comb, as well as a separate detailing trimmer for everything else. It’s easy to clean, and certainly performs well at its role.

Unfortunately, I can’t bring myself to like this, purely because I know Philips, as well as a lot of other companies, make trimming and shaving sets that aren’t focused on the nose and eyebrows for close to the same price. If you need a specific nose and detailing trimmer, this is great, but there are better, much more varied options available to you.

Pros

Cons

  • Sharp blades that cut really well
  • Skin friendly and safe
  • Water resistant and washable
  • Protectube tech. helps to stop pulls and nicks
  • Not rechargeable. Takes conventional batteries
  • Very specific

Designed as a portable little unit, don’t be deceived by the basic design and options on the Betevo. It’s surprisingly powerful, for one, with a decent battery that’s rechargeable from any USB port, which is a great touch for something you might want to just throw into the bag when you’re heading on holiday.

It cuts surprisingly well, though. While it’s not a dedicated hair and beard trimmer, it does come with a foil shaver and precision trimmer, so in a pinch you can shave your face and sharpen yourself up with no real issues. As a nose trimmer, its primary function, it works really well, which you’d expect.

It’s apparently water resistant, but I probably wouldn’t trust it near running water as there’s a hole in the bottom where the USB charger plugs in which is obviously not waterproof. But for a budget, portable detailing and nose trimmer, there’s a lot to like about this.

Pros

Cons

  • Precision sharpened cutting system
  • Good battery life
  • Water resistance and washable
  • Lifetime guarantee and great customer service
  • USB charging
  • Limited attachments
  • Not the best instructions
  • Doesn’t function as the best shaver

This basic grooming kit from Remington comes with a surprising amount, considering its price point and the market it’s aimed at. Not to imply that I was expecting it to be bad, I was just surprised by how much you get in the box when you pick this up.

Not only does it come with a full size trimmer, you also get a foil shaver, that works pretty damn good by the way, an ear and eyebrow detailing trimmer, a hair clipping comb with 8 length settings, and 3 beard and stubble combs. I did find the blades to be a bit narrow, though, especially compared to what I’m used to.

Being a Remington, the cut is as good as you’d expect. The surgical steel blades had no problem with my hair, and I know that my hair is pretty thick, especially my beard. It lasts for a long time, too, with up to 65 minutes of battery backup and a short 4 hour total charge time.

It’s washable, making clean up a breeze, and just in case anything goes wrong, there’s two year warranty cover. Overall, this is a solid and dependable trimmer. It does nothing special, but it cuts your hair, and it does it pretty damn well.

Pros

Cons

  • Good set of accessories
  • Great battery life
  • Self-sharpening, surgical steel blades
  • Washable and water resistant
  • 2 year warranty
  • Only 8 length settings on the clipper
  • Narrow blades mean it might take longer to shave

Beard Boss is Remington’s premium line of shavers and trimmers. I’d never come across one before this one, and I have to say, they really don’t disappoint.

Robustly designed, it doesn’t feel like it’s going to break in your hand like some cheaper models might. The various heads also lock satisfyingly into place, each time I heard that snap I knew it was set and I was good to go.

The heads that come with it are excellent. Everything a man could need. A full-size trimmer and adjustable ten length comb, from 2-20mm, a foil shaver, nose and ear attachment, detail trimmer and bunch of guide combs was more than I could have needed.

It’s quality all the way through, as well. The battery is immense, lasting a massive 3 hours. I could see myself charging this at Christmas and not needing to put it back on charge until the summer came. It’s 100% waterproof, so you can use it in the shower and clean it under the faucet, and despite the amount of power it delivers, the motor is surprisingly quiet.

Honestly, if I was in the market for a complete shaving solution, it’d probably be this one. It does everything. It’s exceptional quality, and it’ll last for years.

Pros

Cons

  • Comprehensive kit
  • Everything that comes in the box is quality
  • Huge 3 hour runtime
  • 5 minute quick charge
  • Turbo mode for more power
  • 100% waterproof
  • Really quiet
  • It’s quite expensive

We like Wahl here at Major Beard, and this grooming kit didn’t disappoint us either. It already came near the top in our list of Wahl trimmers, and there are definite reasons why.

First off, it’s a complete kit. It comes with attachments suitable for every part of the body, from trimming your hair all the way down to other, more intimate areas. One thing I did like about this was that its shaving foil was genuinely good. A lot of other trimming and grooming kits aren’t the greatest if you need a full shave, but I felt like I could use this.

It’s got excellent blades, which you always get with Wahl, and a great battery, running for more than two hours. The trimmer itself, as well as its attachments, all felt solid, though I wish I could have said that for the stand and charger. You can’t use the stand when the trimmer is charging, either, which I thought was a silly oversight.

Overall, we still love this set. It’s solid and dependable, and it gets the job done.

Pros

Cons

  • Good cut, close and clean, and has no problems with thick hairs
  • Gives a nice shave, as well as trimming hair
  • Excellent quality carbon steel blades
  • Powerful motor
  • Easy to use and maintain
  • Good warranty
  • Ear and nose trimmer isn’t the best
  • Occasionally pulls at hairs instead of trimming them
  • The trimmer can’t sit in the base while it’s charging
