I’ve had a beard for some time, so I’ve had plenty of time to practice my styling techniques, and when it comes to styling my beard, beard balm is a key ingredient as it allows me control over how my beard will sit.

Beard Balm allows me to keep my facial hair neat, organized and slick looking, one benefit that creating my own DIY beard balm gives is that I can choose the ingredients used, removing the potential toxic and damaging chemicals from being exposed to my beard and my face.
Personally, I like using my own beard balm over those expensive store bought beard balms not only because it’s cheaper but also because I can create my own unique scents.

Items You Will Need To Follow Make Your Own Beard Balm
Making your own DIY beard balm isn’t a very difficult process, but to get it right you will need a few key ingredients, all of which are listed below.
All of the ingredients we have chosen are completely natural, non-toxic, and healthy for the skin. Keep in mind that getting the consistency and the smell the way you want it is going to take some trial and error regarding how much of each ingredient you add.
It took me a 2 or 3 tries where I slightly altered the ingredient amounts to get it the way I prefer.
- Beeswax
This is also the ingredient that will give your balm the hold and firmness that it needs to style your beard with ease.
The first essential ingredient for your homemade beard balm is beeswax. Beeswax is great because it will give your facial hair the Vitamin A and other essential nutrients that it needs to stay strong and healthy.
It’s a great ingredient because it liquefies with just a little rubbing or friction and solidifies just as fast.
This makes beeswax the perfect starter ingredient for any beard balm and can easily be bought in 1 ounce bars that look exactly like bricks of gold.
- Butters
The butters for your beard balm actually consist of 2 ingredients, these being Shea butter and cocoa butter.
Remember always to get the organic versions of these butters to ensure that you aren’t smearing your face and beard with toxic compounds. These butters will make your beard balm smooth and spreadable, so it doesn’t stay in big chunks on your beard.
Cocoa butter is great because it is full of vitamins and essential oils, not to mention that it smells great too.

You have a few different options when it comes to which carrier oils you want to add.
These oils are crucial for developing the texture of your homemade beard balm.
I prefer coconut oil because it smells great and makes the balm extra smooth, but you may prefer something else.
The choices you can go with include argan oil, jojoba oil, grape seed oil, kukui nut oil, avocado oil, and of course coconut oil.
Each of these will give your balm a slightly different texture and which one you prefer is up to you to find out through some trial and error.

These oils are not meant for anything else other than giving your beard balm a great smell.
This is where you get to choose from various essential oils to get your balm smelling exactly the way you want it.
You may prefer to have it smell like not much at all, in which case you may not choose any essential oil to add.
However if you want your beard balm to double as a great masculine smelling cologne, you can add oils such as sandalwood, cedar, pine, vanilla, or even cinnamon.
Those are just a fraction of the options and which smell you like is up to you to figure out. One a side note, just in case you have dry skin, tree oils are known for reducing dry skin and dandruff.
Besides these key ingredients you will also need a few other things to do the mixing including a kitchen scale to measure out the ingredients, a funnel, pipettes, and eye droppers to add certain amounts of each ingredient, a vat or specialized cooking pan to make your balm, and containers or tins to store the finished product in.
Try not to use a regular cooking pan because the balm is very hard to clean out once it is made and your pan won’t be good for much other than cooking beard balm afterward, something which I found out the hard way.
Step By Step Instructions For Making Your DIY Beard Balm
Making your own beard balm is very easy and doesn’t take too much effort. Just follow these simple instructions that I have outlined below to get perfect results.
These are the steps I follow and it has turned out great every time.
- 1. Measure The Ingredients
First, you want to measure out all of the ingredients that you will be putting in your beard balm. Measure out 2 ounces of Shea Butter, 1 ounce of beeswax, as well as 4 ounces of the coconut oil.
- 2. Heat The Ingredients
Place the measured ingredients into the cooking vat and place it over a very low heat.
You can use the lowest setting on your kitchen stove, a candle heater, or even a low powered Bunsen Burner.
Make sure that your heat is on low or else you will burn the ingredients, once again something that I found out the hard way.
- 3. Stirring The Balm
Slowly and constantly stir around to make sure that the ingredients don’t burn or stick to the bottom of the vat.
You want the mixture to become hot and liquid, but keep in mind that you never want the balm to boil because as soon as it reaches the boiling point, it will begin to burn and lose all of its beneficial qualities.
When your balm is completely liquefied, it is time to take it off of the heat.

- 4. Adding Oils
This is the step where you add the essential oils to get the balm smelling the way you want.
Only put a few drops of the essential oil you have chosen into the balm and mix it well.
Don’t add too much because you will make the balm’s scent overpowering.
Also, you will need to work quickly to stir in the essential oils after removing the balm from the heat because it will cool and solidify quite quickly.
- 5. Transfer And Cool
The final step is to transfer your balm into the storage tin while it is still warm and liquid.
Cover the container with the lid and let it sit overnight to let the balm cool and set.
The best kind of container to use is either a metal tin or a glass mason jar with an airtight lid Letting it set overnight is a great way to ensure that it is set and ready for us in the morning.

I suggest that you use these as a template, an idea of how a beard balm recipe comes together, then experiment with your own essential oils and waxes to come up with something entirely different, something unique to you.

Please keep in mind that unlike most dry ingredients, when it comes to liquid beeswax, it’s volume whether liquid or dry is exactly the same weight. Which makes for some very easy conversion. So if you melt down an ounce of dry beeswax it will become an equal liquid ounce of melted beeswax. Like I said very simple.

- 1 tsp Almond Oil
- 1 tsp Shea Butter
- 1 tsp Argan Oil
- 4 drops of Vitamin E oil
- 2 tsp Beeswax
- 2 drops Tea Tree Oil
- 4 drops Frankensense
WOODSMOKE
This beard balm recipe makes about 3 ounces.
- 2 tbsp beeswax (use the pellets)
- 2 tbsp shea butter
- 1 tbsp cocoa butter
- 3 tsp jojoba oil
- 2 tsp sweet almond oil
- 1/8 tsp bourbon oil
- 4-8 drops cedarwood oil
- 1 drop rosemary oil
BEAUTY GEEK
By Beauty by Geeks. Makes about 1.5 ounces.
- 2 tbsp beeswax
- 1 tsp shea butter
- 1 tsp jojoba oil or sweet almond oil
- 1 tsp argan oil
- 4 drops vitamin E oil
- 2-3 drops vanilla oil
Note: People has suggested that this recipe calls for too much beeswax, so it’s worth trying with only 2 tsp of beeswax rather than the 2 tbsp that the recipe calls for, you could also increase the amount of butters or oils you use.
BEARD BALM
Makes about 1.75 ounces.
- 1 tsp Grapeseed Oil
- 1 tsp Coconut Oil
- 1 tsp Lanolin – Moisturizer
- 2 tbsp Beeswax
- 1 drop of Eucalyptus Oil
- 1 drop of Lemon Oil
- 1 drop of Geranium Oil
COWBOY
By Family Essential Health. Makes just under 4 ounces.
- 2 tbsp Beeswax
- 2 tbsp Shea Butter
- 1 tbsp Cocoa Butter
- 7 tsp Macadamia Oil
- 4 – 8 drops rosemary oil
- 4 – 8 drops cedarwood oil
- 1 drop vetiver oil
- 8 drops lavender oil
CEDAR SMOKE
Makes about 1 ounce.
- 5g beeswax
- 4g shea butter
- 6g rice bran oil
- 4g broccoli seed oil or camellia seed oil
- 6g hemp oil
- 3 drops tea tree oil
- 3 drops bergamot oil
- 1 drop vetiver oil
- 5 drops cedarwood oil
MODERN SAGE
Makes about 7 ounces.
- 4oz of coconut oil
- 2oz of shea butter
- 1oz of beeswax
- 10 drops of rosemary
- 10 drops of lavender
DDBACK
ddBack beard oil. Makes about 10.25 ounces
